Psychiatry, medical mental health care and medication management

Psychiatry (medication management) uses medication to help support your mental health. Providers may prescribe medication to help with symptoms such as anxiety, depression, mood changes, trouble focusing, hallucinations or confused thinking.

The goal of medication management is to find and adjust the medication that works best for you to help reduce symptoms and make daily life easier. Medication is often used alongside therapy.

What to expect

At your first visit, your provider will talk with you about your health history, symptoms and concerns.

If you start medication, your provider will check how well it is working and whether you have any side effects.

It may take a few visits to complete your assessment and create a treatment plan that fits your needs. At follow-up visits, your provider will check how you are doing, review your symptoms, and adjust your medication or treatment if needed. These visits may be short and can also include therapy or other support.
